Quarantine Day 71: Chicks, Chicks & More Chicks

It's Friday! And it was hard getting up this morning. After all I had to stay up until 12:15 to deal with the yogurt! Time got away from me when I started making the yogurt yesterday and it wasn't going to be finished until 12:15.

Anyway, we got up and walked Pip, and then took the chicks down to the deck from Naomi's room. The kids spent the morning playing with the chicks. And then ran off to play with the neighborhood kids leaving the chicks in the family room. I did an hour PD (professional development) on a video editing program and then had a meeting with a colleague all while the kids were playing outside. It was so beautiful out today, nice and hot! The kids were flush most of the day! In the afternoon Juliet changed into her bathing suit and I sprayed her with the hose as she ran through. We went over to Brutus' farm today again. The neighbors were going to help take care of his chickens while he and his family were away for the long weekend. So naturally Naomi and Juliet wanted to go and see the baby chicks and check out the bigger chickens. We spent quite a while there and then headed back. Later in the evening we went back again with the neighbors for them to do their evening chores. They had to corral all the chickens and roosters into the hen house and check on the incubator to see if any other chicks hatched, make sure there is clean water and food out for them too. The girls are excited about all this, which is great, so that when we have to do this every day, they'll know what to do and won't mind doing it! We'll see how long it lasts when we have our own chicken coop to clean! I've been looking into how to get a permit for chickens. Apparently the application process must include a plot plan and where we'll be keeping the coop, plus a certified letter from the assessor that goes out to the abutters letting them know that we want to have chickens and if they have any issue, then they can contact the board of health and their will be a hearing. I'm not sure that the neighbors to the right and left of us will be on board with us having chickens, but there is only one way to find out!

JP had to go into work tonight around 5, so the girls and I made breakfast for dinner - waffles! Well they had waffles and a bagel. I had waffled, salad and eggs. After dinner and after putting the chickens away at Brutus' we came home and took a quick shower and Naomi read books to Juliet while I cleaned up the dishes from dinner. I then showered and went in and told the kids it was time for bed as they were still up reading! They're such good kids!

Oh the chicks are sleeping in the mud room tonight. I'm too nervous about the heat lamp being too hot and catching something on fire! So we moved the chicks to the mud room where the tile floor might help keep the plastic box cooler. Plus Naomi's room smells like chicks/wood shavings. So no more chicks upstairs! I'm going to make a space for them in the garage tomorrow. Hopefully refinish some of the deck furniture tomorrow too. And put away some of the 'home schooling games' that we're not using any more now that it's nice out!

Quarantine Day 24: Technology, Fixing Old Things, Long Walks, Family Game Night

Charles River by our old house! Sunday. This morning the kids got up before us and headed downstairs to watch some Batman cartoon episodes from the 90s that JP got for them. Naomi (& Juliet sort of) has been reading the three Batman comics that we got from Park Street Books that have Spanish on the sides and in some of the frames. One of the great things about technology, or at least the technology in our house, is that we can cast stuff from our phone to the TV in the family room and our bedroom. So while JP and I were just getting up and dressed, he cast the Sunday school stream from the temple. This of course interrupted the Batman cartoon. I peaked my head out the bedroom door and heard..."but we were watching Batman!" The Sunday school songs and chat from the Rabbi's today was about Passover as it is this coming Wednesday evening. After the morning service 45 minutes later there was a zoom session with the Rabbi's to have more of a conversation and so...

Quarantine Day 69: meetings, biking, digging for fossils

Today was a typical quarantine day. We got up. Walked Pip. Made breakfast. And then JP and I got to working while the kids played outside. It was a gorgeous day. The kids went on a fossil expedition digging up rocks in my front flower bed. They apparently promised to leave the flowerbeds as they found them. But that’s not what happened. Then they played in the hose as it was hot out! The rest of the afternoon was spent playing with the kids in the neighborhood. In the evening we walked Pip and went over to the neighbors that was hatching Chickens. He’s going to let us foster a few of them for the next few weeks. Hopefully this will move us forward with us getting our own chickens! So after the chick visit we went out and got a few things to raise them. A heat lamp, a water bottle, sawdust flakes and chick food. Tomorrow we pick up the chicks. Then dinner, books and bed for the kids. And school Committee Meeting for mom.

Quarantine Day 31: More landscaping and Easter Sunday

Signs of spring Easter Sunday. This morning the kids got up at the same time, around 7:30 and they went down and watched some TV and played some video games. I got up and made some breakfast for the gang and then we headed outside. It was almost 60 degrees today. The girls helped me move some of the plants around in our front flower beds. We moved 2 daisy plants, 2 echinacea plants, and 3 day lilies. The side of the house had nothing in the beds there, so we moved 5 plants there. Hopefully the plants make it!!! Then we did a general clean up of the beds. Juliet got a bit bored and went and helped JP dig out weeds for a bit. Then they went and practiced riding bikes. Juliet is a bit timid on her bike with training wheels but she took the bike for a spin around the neighborhood for a bit. Naomi seeing her decided she wanted to ride for a bit too, so she went off and rode her bike around the neighborhood chasing Jules. She's' still learning how to use the gears on her new bike...
