Quarantine Day 32: Storm, Loss of Power, Family Room Campout

Today I had a hard time getting up and at 'em! By the time I rolled out of bed it was a few minutes after 9! I raced downstairs to get Naomi on the computer for her Monday morning class with her teacher. The kids were playing nicely with the dolls in the doll house. JP was already 'at work' in the office and I guess he never went downstairs this morning so the kids were just hanging out on their own! Parenting has gotten a bit lax these last few days/weeks!

I made the kids some breakfast that they could eat while they were working. Juliet hopped on the iPad to see the new video that Stephanie posted. Once Naomi's class was over she worked on her 3 assignments. While the kids were working the wind was ripping. The front porch chairs were blowing and so were the slides. I ran outside and got the chairs and put them in the garage so they wouldn't blow away. Juliet came out and helped gather some of the other stuff that was flying away. One of the windows of the cold frame blew off and shattered on the grass. I left the plants there for the time being.

After the kids were done with their work, I needed them to help me with one of my assignments. I am having the kids recreate a famous painting this week. I first saw this on instagram with the hashtag #tussenkunstenquarantaine, but the Getty Museum posted the same challenge too. I wanted to make an example for my students, so I looked for an image that had 2 girls and a mom in it that I thought we could recreate. I found a painting by Pierre Auguste Renoir, Madam Georges Charpentier and Her Children (1878). This image was perfect for us to recreate. So we went and changed into our costumes, set up the camera and practiced our poses. It only took 3 takes to get a good one! I think we'll look for more of these to do because it was so fun!

After that JP and I prepared the turkey that he had bought at BJ's last week. We thought this would be a good day to have the oven on as it was rainy and raw all day. Juliet helped mix up the rub and JP covered it in the rub. Juliet also helped make the squash soufflé and we were going to also make a green bean casserole, but when Juliet went out to the garage to look for more cans of green beans, she couldn't find any. But she did find that the rain had leaked in under the garage door onto all the shelf stable food we were storing there. So we hurriedly got all the food out of the water and into the mudroom and dried it off. Nothing was ruined, just some of the cardboard packaging of the cereal, but the food inside was fine. We threw out all the wet cardboard and found places for the food in the kitchen.

One of the foods in the garage was a bag of mini marshmallows. I had intended to use this when we did our Space Theme Day. The kids were going to make constellations out of mini marshmallows and toothpicks. We ended up doing this today after our photoshoot instead! The kids looked at the stars in the sky with the app Star Chart to find the different constellations to create. I showed them an example of one and how to do it and then they were off!! I left them doing this to jump on a conference call with my director and then a faculty meeting. The kids played nicely after they were done with the marshmallow activity.

Around 3:30 we took the turkey out of the oven and it had to sit 30 minutes to rest and still cook. This way I could put the squash into the oven and the matzah ball soup on the stove to begin cooking. As the oven closed, we lost power. So we jumped into action and got the generator out and hooked up. We moved my car out of the garage and ran the generator in the garage with the garage doors open 1/3 of the way and the windows open. I ran around getting the plants out of the cold frame and into the garage and moved the other glass window of the cold frame onto the grass so it wouldn't blow off and break too. Once the generator was up and running the squash was back in the oven cooking away. The kids enjoyed the darkness for a minute and ran around looking for flashlights!

We ended up carving the turkey and eating dinner early this evening, around 5pm. It was such a yummy meal. And we have SO much leftover for this week! That makes lunches and dinner a bit easier when we've got yummy easy leftovers! Even though we have time now to make nice dinners, it still feels rushed or a hassle! I really like cooking dinner but I'm still tired at the end of the day and don't have any brain power left to think about cooking. I think its draining trying to work and constantly mom and homeschool the kids. They require constant attention at times, but then other times they are fine.

As we ended dinner early, I was cleaning up and JP had to work tonight, the kids were playing nicely. And the power went out. The generator ran out of gas and shut off, just as JP was getting started with his evening conference all. Ugh. So he hung up and filled the generator with more gas. And then ran out with the kids to the gas station to get more! They enjoyed going out of the house and taking a drive. They looked to see who had power and who didn't as well as looking at all the down trees! Of course when they got back, the power had been fixed by eversource and we didn't even need the generator anymore! I'm glad we have it and I'm glad it worked because dinner would not have been much if it hadn't!

I had mentioned that if we didn't have power we might all camp out in the family room with the fireplace on tonight. Well of course the kids LOVED that idea and ran up to get their sleeping bags! Even though we have power now, they are still sleeping in the family room tonight! We'll see how much sleep they get!

Thanksgiving dinner! It seems like we've been quarantined this long!

Camping out in the family room!

Quarantine Day 24: Technology, Fixing Old Things, Long Walks, Family Game Night

Charles River by our old house! Sunday. This morning the kids got up before us and headed downstairs to watch some Batman cartoon episodes from the 90s that JP got for them. Naomi (& Juliet sort of) has been reading the three Batman comics that we got from Park Street Books that have Spanish on the sides and in some of the frames. One of the great things about technology, or at least the technology in our house, is that we can cast stuff from our phone to the TV in the family room and our bedroom. So while JP and I were just getting up and dressed, he cast the Sunday school stream from the temple. This of course interrupted the Batman cartoon. I peaked my head out the bedroom door and heard..."but we were watching Batman!" The Sunday school songs and chat from the Rabbi's today was about Passover as it is this coming Wednesday evening. After the morning service 45 minutes later there was a zoom session with the Rabbi's to have more of a conversation and so...

Quarantine Day 69: meetings, biking, digging for fossils

Today was a typical quarantine day. We got up. Walked Pip. Made breakfast. And then JP and I got to working while the kids played outside. It was a gorgeous day. The kids went on a fossil expedition digging up rocks in my front flower bed. They apparently promised to leave the flowerbeds as they found them. But that’s not what happened. Then they played in the hose as it was hot out! The rest of the afternoon was spent playing with the kids in the neighborhood. In the evening we walked Pip and went over to the neighbors that was hatching Chickens. He’s going to let us foster a few of them for the next few weeks. Hopefully this will move us forward with us getting our own chickens! So after the chick visit we went out and got a few things to raise them. A heat lamp, a water bottle, sawdust flakes and chick food. Tomorrow we pick up the chicks. Then dinner, books and bed for the kids. And school Committee Meeting for mom.

Quarantine Day 31: More landscaping and Easter Sunday

Signs of spring Easter Sunday. This morning the kids got up at the same time, around 7:30 and they went down and watched some TV and played some video games. I got up and made some breakfast for the gang and then we headed outside. It was almost 60 degrees today. The girls helped me move some of the plants around in our front flower beds. We moved 2 daisy plants, 2 echinacea plants, and 3 day lilies. The side of the house had nothing in the beds there, so we moved 5 plants there. Hopefully the plants make it!!! Then we did a general clean up of the beds. Juliet got a bit bored and went and helped JP dig out weeds for a bit. Then they went and practiced riding bikes. Juliet is a bit timid on her bike with training wheels but she took the bike for a spin around the neighborhood for a bit. Naomi seeing her decided she wanted to ride for a bit too, so she went off and rode her bike around the neighborhood chasing Jules. She's' still learning how to use the gears on her new bike...
