TGIF.
Today was tough. Juliet woke up before 7 and came in and wanted me to fix her face mask (see yesterday's post) that she slept with. It had come off in the middle of the night. Go figure. So once I fixed her mask she was set for a little bit, but then came in (once Naomi woke up) and wanted to know if they could watch tv. It has been our policy that no tv is to be watched on school days when life was normal and we have been sticking to this to try to keep a bit of normalcy and also so they get 'school day' vs 'home days.' So of course when I said no she went and told Naomi and they got grouchy.
But that got JP out of bed and making breakfast after he commuted into work and logged in. I stayed upstairs to do a little work gearing up for going back to work on Monday. After breakfast it was difficult to get the kids back into the swing of 'school day.' They wanted to go play in the basement. We finally began our morning yoga, which Juliet seems to be getting tired of, and then did the animal exercise with Alexa. This seems to be a fan favorite at the moment. We've only done it two days so who knows how long this will last. As we finished up exercising and got ready to do 'work' Juliet had another grouch-a-rella moment. She just didn't want to do anything. So dad took over and played chutes and ladders with her while Naomi and I played a phonics game.
Later that morning I had to jump on a conference call with a colleague to plan our our lessons for the next few weeks. I have no idea what the kids did for that hour and a half, but dad was in charge.
Edit: I'm just learning that they played Chutes and Ladders the whole time.
At lunch we had our lunch time game time. We played 'The Scrambled States of America.' We were supposed to play this yesterday as part of our National Parks and Geography day but alas, we ran out of time! The kids liked finding the different state cards on the big map. Juliet played on Naomi's team and Dad beat them by 1 point!
As it was pouring out, we had indoor recess after and the girls played in the basement while we FaceTimed Nana & Baba. After a while I suggested to the kids that they practice and set up a circus act on the ninja line and trapeze we have in the basement for Dad and I. I really wanted to go upstairs because I was frozen! I got to defrost for maybe 10 minutes before they were ready for us. I made up two tickets and dressed up to go to the circus. Naomi introduced the circus and the acts. Juliet was up first and did a bunch of flips and swings on the trapeze and then did some swings on the rope swing we have. Apparently her act was too long as Naomi got mad and stormed off upstairs. Juliet went and got her then it was Naomi's turn to show us her moves. She too did a bunch of flips and swings on the ninja line and back bends. It was a wonderful circus that seemed to never end.
The circus ended and we all went upstairs to see the pictures that Grammy sent over yesterday for our National Parks day of when she and Poppy went to Bryce Canyon national park. This was one of the parks the kids visited virtually so it was a special treat to see the photos. Especially the photos with Poppy in them. We then brought up the photos of when JP and I went to Alaska to Glacier Bay National Park with Paul and Saesha in 2006. Although the kids did not do a virtual tour of this park they did do a tour of Kenai Fjord so they knew about glaciers. This seemed to be exciting to see us (so young) and see the glaciers.
Juliet and I went up after the photos and took a nap as she seemed really really tired. She has been fighting nap time the last two weeks. Hopefully as this schedule is becoming more the norm, she'll settle into napping more, especially as the boredom will be kicking in so she won't feel like she's missing something when she goes to nap.
Naomi seemed to be bored this afternoon too. Not interested in doing school work or playing on her own or doing anything but wanting to watch something on tv. The next few weeks are going to be long with this kind of attitude.
After the nap everyone seemed to be in a better mood for a bit. Dad even napped! Juliet did have another moment where she had a bit of a sad demeanor. She said that she missed Poppy. She did see pictures of Poppy on the slide show from Bryce Canyon earlier and that possibly triggered this. JP thinks that this whole COVID thing is getting to her too. She's too young to really understand what's going on but old enough to know something not great is going on. We have talked about the virus and washing hands and stuff with the kids. I found this great little book/PDF online that's geared towards kids 7 and under by Manuela Molina to help explain it to the girls. We also watched a music video from the Vietnam Health Department. I'm not sure if this is helping or making them more anxious about what's going on. I think we should plan on having a conversation about it all in the near future!
I'm going to start putting links to articles in the blog that I think are important for historical reference for looking back on this in the future. (I'm not sure anyone is reading this now, let alone will read it in 20 years, but it makes me feel good documenting all this craziness! I guess it's my coping mechanism.) Today this article came out about the world running out of face masks and gave a tutorial on how to make your own. Now we jokingly practiced this last night, but now it's serious. We haven't left the house since this whole thing started (22 days ago for the kids and JP and longer for mom as I've been home and not gone anywhere since I got home from the hospital...I think 28 days at this point!) and so as we don't leave the house we don't really need a mask at this point. But JP went out yesterday to stock up on groceries and he didn't wear one. He did wear gloves. Here's hoping that no one in the store had it and we're all COVID free from the shopping spree. As I mentioned yesterday we crazy sterilized the food and packaging but who knows!
This evening ended with a school committee executive session and then a fun social virtual gathering after with the school committee peeps that made life feel a little more normal for a bit. One of the nice things about having social gatherings this way is that there is no need for a designated driver!! ;)
And once I finish writing this we'll continue our MCU movie marathon. We didn't end up watching a movie last night, so tonight is Spiderman!
