Apparently March is the rainy season here in Shanghai. Out of the 5 days I've been here, its rained for 2 days - and when I say rained, I mean really rained, poured, rained cats & dogs kind of rain - while the other three days its been cloudy, foggy and freezing cold. It is supposed to be like this next week too, but even colder. I'm so glad that I packed my raincoat (thanks Mom) because I am not a fan of umbrellas.
Everyone here uses umbrellas. Its strange because you don't see too many umbrellas at home when it rains, people just book it from their car to the building, or their car to the house, while some people wear rain coats and hats. Here EVERYONE uses umbrellas, even people riding bicycles use umbrellas. Each store and restaurant has an area dedicated to umbrellas - a stand that can hold many umbrellas for you to leave your umbrella there & they also have plastic baggies just for you to put your umbrella in, so you don't get water anywhere in their establishment. It is actually quite crazy how much focus is on the umbrella here.
Back to the people on bikes with umbrellas. They also wear these great ponchos that are large enough to fit over the front of the bike - handlebars and basket and front tire area - and fit over the back so if they have a backpack or something it won't get wet. Above is a picture of all the crazy ponchos the bikers wear. At home we would never think to bike in the rain, let alone wear a poncho while biking in the rain or hold an umbrella while biking in the rain. I guess when it rains a lot you make due with the rain and keep on keeping on like you usually do!
