So I have had the pleasure to experience a Chinese Massage Parlor.
On Monday this week was 'National Woman's Day,' and the teaching union gave all the female teachers a free foot massage coupon, so I got one too! On Thursday after school, Mr. Shen, the principal, drove me to the massage parlor. And wow, it was totally like out of the movies!
First you get there and take off your shoes and get Adidas like sandals. Then you go upstairs to the changing room and change into shorts for the foot massage and a bathrobe for a full body massage. The room is basically a locker room. They have showers, lockers and bathrooms. I guess you'd want to shower after a full body massage to get the oil off? Anyway, after that they lead you down this hallway (with really low ceilings) with doors to different types of massage rooms. Some are for full body, some are just for feet (see above photos for foot massage room) and each room has different amounts of furniture. So you could go with a large group and all sit in the same room while getting a foot massage or just with one or two other people. The rooms had TVs and dim lighting. So I made my way to the room they told me to go to and waited for my messuse. A young gentleman came in, who spoke NO english and started asking me questions. I finally understood that he was inquiring what kind of foot massage I wanted and I pointed at the menu.
And then the foot massage began. I have to admit it was a bit weird having another guy touch my feet and legs and I was a little tense in the beginning. But after a while I relaxed and enjoyed the 70 minutes of heaven! The last ten minutes I got a ginger treatment to help with circulation in the legs. They put minced ginger in water and placed it on top of my legs. Then a warm towel was placed on top and it was all wrapped in plastic. After a while it began to get hot. Thank god I know how to say 'hot' in Chinese! And then the ginger was removed and more massaging insued.
The whole way home my legs were so warm from the ginger treatment. Going home I figured out how to use the bus. The number 42 bus takes you for 2 yuan (30 cents) to this massage parlor, a hidden gem among skyscrapers and shopping centers.
