Ping Pong, the sport of the Chinese, is one of the activities for students to participate in while in Phys. Ed. We had a private lesson with one of the Phys. Ed. teachers. He was very surprised that I knew how to play and that I was any good. I tried to communicate to him that I had a ping pong table in my house when I was growing up. At first he did not understand what I was saying, but after a few rounds of broken Chinese, he then understood and was shocked that we actually had a ping pong table in the house!! Addy, one of the student from Needham, picked up ping pong very quickly and soon Addy and I were dueling at the ping pong table. After I beat Addy in two quick games, the teacher wanted to play me. He then had 2 Chinese students play me and I beat them as well. The Needham students were very impressed as were the Chinese students!!
Calligraphy, the written art form of the Chinese, was taught to us today. This was surprisingly hard to do. It takes a lot of concentration to get the proper movement of the pen brush and the proper strokes. There is a Chinese saying that one who practices Chinese calligraphy will have a long life. Much like Tai Chi, this takes much concentration of the mind, and if you do this everyday, your mind will be strong and you will live a longer life.
