The other night Jeff and Cecilia (mostly Jeff, as they call him the 'Chief Chef') prepared a wonderful Chinese meal for me. This evening The Chief Chef out did himself. Not only did they cook for me this time, but for 6 of the German exchange students that arrived last Thursday. There are 12 German students all together and these 6 boys are staying in a hotel as there were not enough host families, so the teachers decided to cook them dinner to give them a taste of authentic Chinese food.
Side note:
Last week when I went to dinner here the kitchen was a mess. They warned me before I came over that the kitchen was dirty, but when they said dirty, they meant disgustingly dirty! I couldn't tell you what the color of the floor or counter tops were supposed to be or when the last time the kitchen was cleaned, and I don't think any of the teachers could tell you this either. The pots and pans and plates were clean but the rest of it, counter tops, cupboards, the floor, were all very very dirty. So the other day I was talking with Rena, the teacher in charge of the exchange programs, and she asked me about the dinner that the teachers cooked. I told her that the food was wonderful but the kitchen was really dirty. Today she had sent someone in to have the kitchen cleaned! When I walked in tonight, I was shocked, it was so nice and clean and organized! Pictured above is Jeff and Anna in the clean kitchen. Notice how low the counter is. It is also like this in my apartment.
Jeff cooked a delicious meal again. Chicken wings (the favorite and most requested dish), dumplings, fried tofu with ketchup (which translates to 'tomato sauce'), ground pork and eggs, lotus root with rice, spinach, spicy leafy veggies, fish, cucumbers and of course rice. I didn't feel so bad at my terrible chopstick skills tonight, as the German students weren't much better than me. Above is a photo of everyone at the meal. The weather was very warm out, so we ate outside, which is good because otherwise we'd be really cramped in the kitchen or one of the teacher's dorm rooms.
The food was fantastic, the company was wonderful and the weather was great. A fabulous way to end the evening.
