Friday. Today is June 19th. The last few weeks I have learned about this important day in history. June 19th or Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated ending of slavery in the United States. It took over 2 years for this news to get to Texas after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed freeing all slaves. There were no celebrations in our little town, but JP and I did have a conversation about it together and then had a conversation about it with the girls at dinner. JP and I are both reading 'Me & White Supremacy" by Layla Saad. This is a 28 day challenge (essentially) for white people to grapple with our whiteness and how we've been part of the problem whether we think so or not. I just finished the first week of this and it is a guilty, reflective, awakening reading this book. I look forward to exploring this topic and reading several other books this summer so that I can be a better active anti-racist - for my children, for my students and for the rest of society.
OK so that is a heavy topic and the rest of this blog post is going to seem not related at all and sort of foolish to write...
I had my final faculty meetings today to end the school year. JP had several calls and worked upstairs and did laundry while working. This has been the Friday routine. The kids played in the neighborhood all day. Grammy came by in the late afternoon for a little visit. She sat in the yard with the girls for a bit and then sat on the deck with the parents for a bit once the girls ran off into the neighborhood. Juliet napped for a few hours this afternoon. We've been trying to get her to nap because she SO needs it still but it is always a losing battle. She's happier when she naps! And so is everyone else!! We ate dinner outside and then put in the chicks and walked Pip over to the neighbor's farm to put away their chickens. This has become the neighbor's chore they do for the neighbor with the farm and our kids just want to go with them to visit the animals. So we hung out there for a while and checked out the chickens and cats. Then we headed home to an ice cream treat on the deck before heading off to bed.
