Monday. Today we went to the Millis Peaceful Protest with the kids. They each made a sign before we went. We had a conversation about what the protest was about and I had them think about what they wanted to write on the sign. Naomi wanted to see what other people wrote on signs and so we looked on google images and she liked the signs that said "Being Black is Not a Crime." So we cut up a cardboard box and she wrote that on a piece of cardboard. Juliet wrote " I standup for black people." "Because my friend Sophia is black and I like her." We had a conversation about how you would stand up for your friends no matter their skin color and if someone was being mean to a friend because they had different colored skin then we would stand up and say NO! Stop it.
At the protest it was peaceful. We were holding up our signs and people driving by would honk in solidarity. At one point the organizer started different chants that we would repeat back. Then we had 8 minutes and 45 seconds of silence to remember George Floyd. One of the organizers said that if people wanted they could lay on the ground for this. Most of the people decided to do this. So we too laid on the ground. Naomi then asked me why we were laying down and I explained to her that there was a black man who was killed by a white police office for the color of his skin and he was laying on the ground for these 8 minutes when he died. Naomi did not like this and was upset that someone would do that. We talked about that is why we were here, to stand up against this.
We did other things today, like school, school work, playing outside, were in a birthday parade for the neighborhood kids, but this was the most important thing.
