Quarantine Day 95: Last day in 2nd Grade, Last day with Ms. Stephanie, Strawberry Picking & Pie

Monday,
Today JP headed into work (not sure why) but he felt the need to go in today and as it is Monday he headed to golf later in the afternoon.

The girls and I got up and walked Pip. Naomi had her last class with Sra. Migos today. And last few assignments to do and turn in. I was getting breakfast ready for her and Juliet so I didn't get to hear much of what they talked about or say thank you 'in person.' But Naomi assured me that she said thanks for a great year!

I had a department meeting at 10 for an hour and then we headed over to Tangerini's to pick some strawberries. This year you have to sign up for a time slot on their website and last night was the first time I was able to get any time slots! They have been sold out since they opened for picking last week. I didn't read the site carefully and accidentally signed up for one person at 3pm today and then went back to sign up 2 more people and no time slots were available then. Ugh. So I signed up for 3 time slots at 11:30.

When we got there I explained what I did and asked if we could just pick our 3pm time slot now, so we each got a box to fill plus the extra box for our 3pm slot. So it worked out because my kids can eat strawberries by the carton full in one sitting! Plus I don't mind supporting the local business. It was very well run and safe. We got there and headed right for the picking area. A woman was sitting at a table checking people in, and there was a sink set up next to her. We had to wash our hands before we could pick up the berry boxes from her. Once we did this and had our picking boxes we were told to go to row nine to pick and ONLY pick in this row. We had to enter the row on the left and walk down the whole row to the end to exit (one way rows basically). There were maybe 2 groups in the field when we got there, and by the time we started we were the only ones in the field. The kids filled up the boxes pretty quickly. Oh and we had to wear masks and we could not eat any berries in the field. So the boxes got filled up quickly and we then walked down the row to the end. After we walked over to the car to put our berries in a large container I had brought with us to transport them all home safely! Then we headed back to the farm stand to pick out some fresh veggies. We got radishes (our radishes in our garden have been long gone!), potatoes, broccoli, some personal pies for dinner - kids got taco pies, I got spinach and feta, a mixed berry dessert pie, and a few pastries for breakfast tomorrow. Then we loaded that up into the car and headed back to the ice cream stand! The kids had ice cream for lunch. After lunch we went home as Juliet had her last meeting with her teacher.

Apparently Juliet's teacher has been doing one on one zoom sessions with anyone that wanted to sign up. Juliet was not interested in doing any of the class zoom sessions and not super interested in doing 'work.' So I didn't push it with her. She is very good at playing independently and will get up in the morning and make art or play in the doll house or watch her teacher's you tube channel all on her own while we are all still asleep. But as this is her last year at Woodside, I thought it would be nice for her to have a one on one chat with her teacher, and for her teacher to see her. She has been with Ms. Stephanie for the last 3 years. I signed Juliet up for the last time slot knowing we could go over time if needed. Each time slot was only for 10 minutes.

Juliet talked with Ms. Stephanie for an hour and a half! She talked about all the stuff we did the last few months, showed her the chicks, gave her a mini tour of the yard - until we went out of wifi range, then she showed Ms. Stephanie her room and all the stuff she had saved over the last year from work she did in class. It was cute and Ms. Stephanie was amazingly patient and kind. This Friday is a materials drop off at Woodside so we'll bring the books we still have from way back in March and drop them off and see her for one final good bye. The plan was to have the kids go to Woodside for extended day, but as the fall is so up in the air we're not sure if this will happen.

After that Juliet went outside to play with all the other kids in the neighborhood. I got the chickens out and sat with them by our pear trees. The kids came over every now and again to say hello and check on the chickens. The chickens like Pip and climbed up on him at one point. Pip didn't seem to mind. So then it became a game the kids played trying to get them all on his back.

Eventually it was time to make dinner. The pies we got took an hour to cook so those got put in around 5:15 and by the time the dinner timer on their fit bit rolled around it was time for the pies to come out. We ate on the deck. The pies were so good, and rich. I could only eat half. Juliet ate half too, but Naomi, she ate her whole pie! She must have been hungry! After dinner we took Pip for an evening walk and ran into some neighbors who were doing the same with their dog. We chatted and walked and the kids played and the dogs played a bit. Then it was time for bed and chilly out!

The kids got ready for bed nicely and Naomi read a few books to Juliet, then Juliet read one of her books to us. As we were finishing up reading, Dad came home from golf and got to read one more book with them. Juliet was so tired she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer. She went right to sleep! Naomi, however, is still up reading in her bed. Tomorrow she gets to meet her 3rd grade teacher on Zoom and I have my last Zoom classes with my students. We're winding down here!

Summer here we come!

Quarantine Day 24: Technology, Fixing Old Things, Long Walks, Family Game Night

Charles River by our old house! Sunday. This morning the kids got up before us and headed downstairs to watch some Batman cartoon episodes from the 90s that JP got for them. Naomi (& Juliet sort of) has been reading the three Batman comics that we got from Park Street Books that have Spanish on the sides and in some of the frames. One of the great things about technology, or at least the technology in our house, is that we can cast stuff from our phone to the TV in the family room and our bedroom. So while JP and I were just getting up and dressed, he cast the Sunday school stream from the temple. This of course interrupted the Batman cartoon. I peaked my head out the bedroom door and heard..."but we were watching Batman!" The Sunday school songs and chat from the Rabbi's today was about Passover as it is this coming Wednesday evening. After the morning service 45 minutes later there was a zoom session with the Rabbi's to have more of a conversation and so...

Quarantine Day 69: meetings, biking, digging for fossils

Today was a typical quarantine day. We got up. Walked Pip. Made breakfast. And then JP and I got to working while the kids played outside. It was a gorgeous day. The kids went on a fossil expedition digging up rocks in my front flower bed. They apparently promised to leave the flowerbeds as they found them. But that’s not what happened. Then they played in the hose as it was hot out! The rest of the afternoon was spent playing with the kids in the neighborhood. In the evening we walked Pip and went over to the neighbors that was hatching Chickens. He’s going to let us foster a few of them for the next few weeks. Hopefully this will move us forward with us getting our own chickens! So after the chick visit we went out and got a few things to raise them. A heat lamp, a water bottle, sawdust flakes and chick food. Tomorrow we pick up the chicks. Then dinner, books and bed for the kids. And school Committee Meeting for mom.

Quarantine Day 31: More landscaping and Easter Sunday

Signs of spring Easter Sunday. This morning the kids got up at the same time, around 7:30 and they went down and watched some TV and played some video games. I got up and made some breakfast for the gang and then we headed outside. It was almost 60 degrees today. The girls helped me move some of the plants around in our front flower beds. We moved 2 daisy plants, 2 echinacea plants, and 3 day lilies. The side of the house had nothing in the beds there, so we moved 5 plants there. Hopefully the plants make it!!! Then we did a general clean up of the beds. Juliet got a bit bored and went and helped JP dig out weeds for a bit. Then they went and practiced riding bikes. Juliet is a bit timid on her bike with training wheels but she took the bike for a spin around the neighborhood for a bit. Naomi seeing her decided she wanted to ride for a bit too, so she went off and rode her bike around the neighborhood chasing Jules. She's' still learning how to use the gears on her new bike...
