Thursday. Today it was a rainy day. The kids did their work and then went to play with the neighborhood kids. When it started raining the kids rain into our garage and played in there for a bit. They colored and played with the chickens.
Meanwhile, JP just finished hooking up the rain barrel this morning so when it poured we all went out in the rain to see if it was working! And of course it was!! So cool! We've had this rain barrel for about 2 maybe 3 years and it has been sitting under the deck and then sitting by the front porch just waiting to be hooked up. We had been dragging our feet doing it. But JP finally did it in the back of the house near where the chicken coop is going to go. We'll use this to fill up their water!! And water the plants too. We checked back in later this evening and the barrel was 3/4 filled!
When the rain stopped the kids went back outside. They played on the swing, played Man Hunt with all the kids in the neighborhood, let the chicks free range, put the chicks back...just general summer fun kids stuff!
JP worked up in the office all day while simultaneously doing laundry! Thanks love! I had a few meetings in the afternoon and did some reading in "Me and White Supremacy" by Layla Saad. It is essentially a 28 day challenge of introspective, reflective and thought provoking look at ones own white privilege and the white supremacy systems that we live within. I'm only on day 2 and it is been eye opening. I began some of this work this past fall in a course I took, so it is a little less shocking and hard to think about my own white privilege because I started thinking about this a few months ago, but it is still hard to understand the depths of the systems in place keeping people of color on the margins. All of the meetings I had today were about processing racial equity within our schools, checking in and seeing what our next steps are, figuring out action steps and how to carry this work forward through the summer and into the next school year.
When the second big wave of rain hit around 5pm, all of the kids went home for dinner. We made veggie sloppy joes and watched the second Lego Movie. Then we showered the kids and got them off to bed.
JP found a fan edit of the last Harry Potter movie to condense it into one movie. I fell asleep Monday when we started watching it, so we're watching the second half tonight!
I saw this on Facebook today...I don't understand... do they not care about our kids safety?
Coloring in the garage.
Rain barrel up and running!
