This morning we got up very early, loaded up the school shuttle with a ton of luggage and headed to Pudong airport. We were all very sad to leave Shanghai as we have all become very close with the people, the school and the city. We got to the airport with plenty of time to check in and good thing too because several of our bags got searched by security, mostly because we had water or juice boxes stowed away in our backpacks! And almost everyone went over the weight limit with their checked baggage too, but the nice man at the desk didn't charge us for this!
We landed in Xi'an around noon, found our luggage, had lunch at the airport and headed out to see some sites. Our first stop today was the Han Yangling Tomb. Here we saw Emperor Liu Qi Han's Tomb, the fourth emperor of the western Han dynasty, and his empress Wang, (mother of the famous Han Wudi) who died in 126 B.C. and was buried alongside her husband's tomb.
Around the mausoleum are 81 satellite tombs where approximately 60,000 burial objects have been unearthed, including: chariots, pottery, mini terracotta soldiers, terracotta animals. So far they have only unearthed 13 of these satellite tombs and we got to see all of these excavation sites. The sites are set up as a museum and you can walk around them and over them on a glass floor, as well as down in between them to see the unearthed objects up close. They also had reconstructed one of the satellite tombs with three chariots, horses and people so you could get an idea of what it looked like back in the day of the Han.
After the Han tombs we went to the hotel. We are staying at the Meihua Golden Tang International Hotel. This hotel is AWESOME! It is such a nice change from the old apartment in Shanghai. The beds are softer, the shower stays hotter longer and the windows aren't drafty. We dropped off our luggage took a quick shower and headed to dinner.
Dinner was at a small little restaurant with traditional Xi'an dishes. Xi'an is known for their noodles, as the town is located in northern China where they produce a lot of wheat. It is said that here the noodles are as wide as ones waste band. They were that wide and very good. We also had some pumpkin cakes, kung pao chicken, scallion pancakes, green veggies, potatoes with glazed sugar. All the dishes were wonderful. From here we went back to the hotel for an early night.
