This morning we woke up and headed out to a French bakery for breakfast...very Chinese. Then we set out for the Bund. We walked down Nanjing Road to get to the Bund. Nanjing Road is like Fifth Avenue in NY and today was a holiday, Qing Ming Festival (the Chinese version of Dia de los Muertos - day of the dead), so EVERYTHING was very crowded. We walked along the Bund with the mass of people headed in the direction of the Yuyuan Gardens. Here we were accosted by people trying to sell us fake Rolexes, Gucci Bags & iPods. We fended them off with 'bu yao,' or do not want and made our way towards the gardens.
We went through the crowded shopping area and got tickets to enter the gardens. Because of the cost of tickets, there were far fewer people in the gardens, making a great respite from the craziness of the city. We even met some folks from MA who let us know the good news about the Sox beating the Yankees on opening day! After strolling the grounds we popped over to Din Tai Fung for some great dumplings. Betsey even mastered the chopsticks enough to eat!
Food in our bellies we wandered throughout the shops, and got some great deals on some clothes and souvenirs. Tired and exhausted we caught the #42 bus back to the apartment. Here we had some tea and rested our feet before going down to the noodle man for take out. Dinner cost $1.50. Everyone is tired and being silly... time for bed.
